How Do Plugged Items, Permafrost, Satellites Contribute to Climate Change?

Hey people! I thought this post should be about a cause that contributes to climate change that we see every day, what permafrost is, and how satellites contribute to climate change. Let's get started...

With plugged items, we really think they don't do anything. Do plugged items use electricity when they are turned off? Yes, they do. This is called "phantom load" or "vampire energy." About 75 percent of a home's energy is being used when appliances are turned off. Transformers draw a lot of power and waste 75% of the energy going through them. This can increase the burning of fossil fuels while increasing your electricity bill. Televisions, phones, stereos, microwaves, coffee makers, computers, and phones are some of the many products that use electricity even when turned off. I bet you did not guess that phones and computers use power even when turned off. Even though this is sort of irrelevant, I tracked down my carbon footprint for the day. I took a five-minute shower in the morning and then turned the heater on for twenty-five minutes since it was freezing. I went to school in a hybrid, eco-friendly car, taking ten minutes. Then, during school, I used my laptop for about a hundred minutes. On the way back home, I went in the hybrid car. When I reached home, I took a three-minute shower in the evening. I used my laptop for four hours. My goal from now on is to use my computer for two hours rather than four and use the heater less. You can put plugs on power strips to conserve power and disconnect anything you are not using from the power ports. While conserving power to help save the planet, permafrost contributes to climate change in a dark way.

Permafrost is ground that is frozen completely. It is organic carbon, plant material in the soil. Then the microbes in the soil decompose the material as the permafrost defrosts. This releases greenhouse gasses, such as methane and carbon dioxide. It is a combination of soil, rocks, and snow. While thawing permafrost worsens climate change, climate change can cause the thawing of permafrost. As temperatures increase, it melts the permafrost, releasing carbon dioxide and methane. Satellites can help detect thawing permafrost.

Satellites can detect climate change because they can take images of it. They can also help us further understand what climate change is doing to our planet. They can forecast dangerous storms, hurricanes, typhoons, tornadoes, and many more. We can also develop solutions to problems with satellites. I think that satellites are really beneficial for climate change. They help us measure Earth's vital signs over time, and figure out the changes over a period of time, and help us figure out solutions to these problems.

Some things you can do to combat climate change are:

  • The most common thing you can do is recycle, and it's probably the easiest.

  • You can recycle plastic water bottles and bags, which have the recycle sign on them.

  • You can also help with clean clean-ups. There are plenty of clean-ups for beaches, roads, and many more.

  • You can educate people like I am trying to do.

  • You can use less plastic because most of it goes into the ocean and then breaks down because of the heat, which poisons the sea.

  • You can walk or bike. When you walk or bike, you don't release carbon emissions. In worst cases, use public transportation because many people use it, and it doesn't release more carbon dioxide.

  • You can plant plants.

  • You can conserve water to have water left, like taking 5-minute showers. You can buy reusable stuff, so you don't need to use too much plastic. You can participate in peaceful protests.

  • You can also talk to people who have more knowledge about climate change so that you can tell other people.

  • You can put a bucket in the shower when you shower, so you can use that water for your plants or clean something up.

  • You can buy local produce.

  • You can build a garden and grow fresh produce.

  • You can buy organic produce.

Try to make a difference to change the world for the better, even if it is a small contribution.
